Re: 2020 RECYCLING CALENDAR
Dear Resident,
We are pleased to announce that the Marlboro 2020 RECYCLING CALENDAR is now on line and will shortly be mailed to your home. Please note that the official DPW Recycling Calendar (look for ‘Official’ and ‘Do Not Discard’ on the red and green cardstock cover) is the ONLY calendar that can be relied upon for accurate and complete information.
In recent past years, Marlboro has offered curbside, piled leaf collection multiple times a year. Each year the collection of leaves in this manner becomes more costly and inefficient. The reasons are obvious. Our population is much larger than it was in the 1980’s and our weather patterns have changed causing the leaves to fall later outside our planned scheduled pick-up. When we do adjust our schedule, often an unpredictable snowfall early in the season leaves a very short window for leaf collection. We have also struggled with landscapers that do not follow our collection schedule and pile leaves in the street at any time, without consequence. Lawn debris in the streets present hazards to pedestrians and traffic, impedes water flow to sewers causing flooding and icing, causes pollutants to enter our waterways, and is just plain unsightly. Additionally, multiple, time-consuming DPW runs throughout the town is just not cost effective. It is for these reasons that several surrounding towns including Manalapan, Old Bridge and Monroe Township with similar populations only offer bagged leaf collection. As a result, we are adjusting our leaf collection policy as follows:
To accommodate residents while being mindful of safety, we have planned four (4) leaf collections-one curbside and three additional biodegradable paper bag collections. This increases the curbside collection from 2 to 4 times a year, maintaining the service that residents expect, and at the same time help to keep our streets clean and free of debris for more of the year.
We remind you that the threat of severe weather can cause the Marlboro Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to cancel or postpone curbside collection at any time of year. Notice of cancellation or postponement as well as emergency updates are made via Township email blasts, social media, SWIFT 911 Police calls, and on the webpage. For that reason, we ask every resident to take a moment and register for any or all of our communication options by visiting the Township website HERE.
It takes a community to keep our environment clean and township safe and maintain our quality of life. I thank you for being part of this effort and hope you find our annual recycling calendar helpful to you and your family.
Yours in Community,
Mayor Jon Hornik
